The Coroner (Book Review)

February 21, 2020 1 Comments

Title : The Coroner
Author : M. R. Hall
Genre : Mystery, Crime, Thriller
Published : 2009
Rating : 3.5 /5

Synopsis :

Perhaps she had been too swift to imagine a conspiracy, too easily swept up in the emotion of teenager’s shocking death. Snapping her briefcase shut, she made a decision to go about her investigation in as detached and professional a manner as she could. She was the coroner, an impartial, clear-headed, determined investigator of the truth…

When lawyer Jenner Cooper is appointed Severn Vale District Coroner, she’s hoping for a quiet life and space to recover from a traumatic divorce, but the office she inherit from the recently deceased Harry Marshall contains neglected files hiding dark secrets and your trail of buried evidence.

Could the tragic death in custody of a young boy be linked to the apparent suicide of a teenage prostitute and the fate of Marshall himself? Jenny's curiosity is aroused. Why was Marshall behaving so strangely before he died? What injustice was he planning to uncover? And what caused his abrupt change of heart?

In the face of powerful and sinister forces determined to keep both the truth hidden and the troublesome Coroner in check, Jenny embarks on a lonely and dangerous one-woman crusade for justice which threatens not only her career but also her sanity.

Review :

M. R. Hall has created a brilliant, original and precise plot yet it’s pace does not match the general thriller genre. Jenny Cooper is the only gallant protagonist whom I have ever witnessed in the book world. Her character developed in a stupendous way that no one can resist but to fall for her. Forensic and post mortem scenes are remarkably well written.

"Experience had thought her that you could trust no one with professional secrets, not even loved ones".

Even though the writing style of this book has to be appreciated for it's narration with vivid details, this plot is laggard. I tried to speed up my reading pace in vain. It was a sluggish page turner for me.

M. R. Hall carried out the whole story ingeniously. However, it seemed to me that he failed to sustain the speed which was in the first half of the story. Apart from that, his tale is painstakingly elaborative.

In my point of view, this is not a bad book of its kind, but this is not the best book either.

If you want more of Jenny Cooper there are more novels with her as a protagonist.

I highly recommend this book to the people who love intricate scene by scene narration, crime admirers and to all the fans of M. R. Hall.

Happy reading!!!

The Alchemist (Book Review)

February 11, 2020 3 Comments

Title : The Alchemist
Author : Paulo Coelho
Genre : Quest, adventure, fantasy
Published : 1988 (English - 1993)
Rating: 4.4 /5

Synopsis:

It is the story of a shepherd boy from the Spanish province of Andalusia who dreams of travelling the world in search of a treasure as desirable as any ever found. From his home he journeys to the exotic markets of North Africa and then into the Egyptian desert, where the fateful encounter with the alchemist awaits him…
It is an unforgettable story about the essential wisdom of listening to our heart and, above all, following our dreams.

Review:

The Alchemist (Portuguese : O Alquimista) is a novel by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho. This book has sold 65 million copies and also been translated into approximately 80 languages, setting the Guinness world record for the most translated book by any living author.

This book enthralled me in a way that I don’t even want to get away from this strangely astonishing yet so authentic world. This book is simply unputdownable and I coaxed myself to pause reading it to get some rest (by that time I had half finished it).

This story developed in a way that almost all people can relate to the messages conveyed by this brilliant author. I won’t reveal anything about this ravishing story (you must experience it yourself) yet I will let you know about few messages from it. Everyone believes the world's greatest lie.

“At a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what’s happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. That’s the world’s greatest lie.”

Don’t ever fall for this lie. Dreams are made to be followed. It’s the simple things in life that are the most extraordinary. The closer you get to the realization of your dream, the more difficult things become. You will be constantly subjected to test your persistence and courage. And don’t forget that persistence is the key. Remember that wherever your heart is, you will find your treasure there. Some people give up on their dreams to take care of their loved ones. They convince themselves that love is their priority; not their dreams.

“You must understand that love never keeps the man from pursuing his destiny. If he abandons his pursuit, it’s because it wasn’t true love… the love that speaks the language of the world.”

You may be afraid that, by pursuing your dreams, you might lose everything you’ve won. But you will never be able to escape from your heart. So it’s better to listen to what it has to say. That way you will never have to fear an unanticipated blow.

“Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams.”

Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own. So, don’t give up on your dreams for the sake of others.

“Life is a journey. Make sure you don’t miss a thing.”

Okay, I’m going to stop my fangirl rattling now.

I highly recommend this book to all the dreamers who are endeavouring their desires despite the defiance of others (or by the whole world). And of course to the fans of Paulo Coelho.

Happy reading!!!

The Secret (Book Review)

February 06, 2020 8 Comments

Synopsis:

You hold in your hands a great secret…

It has been passed down through the ages, highly coveted, hidden, lost, stolen, and bought for vast sums of money. This centuries - old Secret has been understood by some of the most prominent people in history: Plato, Galileo, Beethoven, Edison, Carnegie, Einstein – along with other inventors, theologians, scientists, and great thinkers. Now The Secret is being revealed to the world.
“As you learn The Secret, you will come to know how you can have, be, or do anything you want. You will come to know who you really are. You will come to know the true magnificence that awaits you in life.” – From the Introduction.

Review :

To be honest, I’m a lover of fantasy yet I choose this book to know about the self help genre and it is one of the most recommended ones too. This book entangled me within few pages of reading it. They said “The Secret is the law of attraction.” When I read this line I was like "Okay, I heard about this already. What’s so new in this?". I decided to further read this book to answer my dubiety. And then I understood that what you think about the most or focus on the most, is what will appear as your life.

“Whatever you sow, you reap! Your thoughts are seeds, and the harvest you reap will depend on the seeds you plant”.

As you understand the law of attraction, they said try to attract the good instead of the bad. Trust me, I always have a farrago of both positive and negative thoughts. I don’t even know I’m attracting the things to my life through my thoughts, until I came across this line “ Everything sent out returns to the source – You”. The law of attraction is an irresistible force which is the combination of thought and love.

“ There is no greater power in the Universe than the power of love”.

So, the feeling of love is the highest frequency you can emit. The greater the love you feel and emit, the greater the power you are harnessing.

They said to use this secret, you must follow the creative process steps (i.e. ask, believe and receive).
If you have instinctive feelings, follow it, and you will find that the Universe is magnetically moving you to receive what you asked for.

“ Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase. Just take the first step”.

When you want to attract something into your life, make sure your actions don’t contradict your desires.

“You are the designer of your destiny. You are the author. You write the story. The pen is in your hand, and the outcome is whatever you choose”.

So, choose wisely. Be aware of your thoughts.

This book also talks about the secret to money, relationships, health, the world, you and life. To know more you must bring this secret to your life and it will unmistakably change your life into a positive one.

I highly recommend this book to all the people who are crawling in a heft of negative thoughts, and also to the ones who want to feel motivated & empowered and of course to the lovers of self help genre.

Happy Reading!!!
