Birthday Girl (Book Review)

March 27, 2020 5 Comments

Title : Birthday Girl
Author : Haruki Murakami
Genre : Short story, Fiction
Published : Japanese (2002), English (2003)
Rating : 4/5

Synopsis :

She waited on tables as usual that day, her twentieth birthday. She always worked Fridays, but if things had gone according to plan on that particular Friday, she would have taken the night off.

One rainy Tokyo night, a waitress's uneventful twentieth birthday takes a strange and fateful turn when she’s asked to deliver dinner to the restaurant's reclusive owner.

Birthday Girl is a beguiling, exquisitely satisfying taste of master storytelling, published to celebrate Murakami's 70th birthday.

Review :

Haruki Murakami is a famous Japanese writer. I really wanted to know about his writing style for ages and it happened finally.

Murakami, after reading “Timothy’s birthday” by William Trevor and “The Moor” by Russell Banks, felt haunted and decided to collect more birthday-themed stories for an anthology. And he wrote this book especially for this collection.

This is the first time I read a short story in book form. And it took me exactly 20 minutes to finish this. This story is exceptionally nifty. It upholds enough suspense (for this book length) till the end.

“No matter what they wish for, no matter how far they go, people can never be anything but themselves. That’s all”.

And I’m warning all the readers that it has an “open-ended” climax. I interpreted its ending in so many ways. And it is totally up to readers' view. This book is a perfect delight for time savers.

“Time is going to play an important role”.

I highly recommend this book to all the readers who love short stories, to those who want to read good story in a brief time and of course to all the fans of Haruki Murakami.

Happy reading!!!

Murder On The Orient Express (Book Review)

March 15, 2020 1 Comments

Title : Murder on the Orient Express
Author : Agatha Christie
Genre : Crime, Thriller, Mystery, Detective
Published : 1934
Rating : 4.6/5

Synopsis :

Just after midnight, the famous Orient Express is stopped in its tracks by a snowdrift. A passenger lies dead in his compartment, stabbed a dozen times, his door locked from the inside.

Isolated by the storm and with a killer in the midst detective Hercule Poirot must identify the prime suspects from a scornful and impatient array of foreign passengers – before the murderer decides to strike again…

Review :

Agatha Christie created Hercule Poirot as an undeniable brainiac private detective (and also a retired Belgian police officer). He just steals our attention by finding clues with great finesse. You cannot defy but to get yourself intertwined to witness his flair of solving riddles.

“The impossible could not have happened, therefore the impossible must be possible in spite of appearances”.

Two other important characters are Monsieur Bouc (a friend of Hercule Poirot) and Dr. Constantine (a physician who acts as the coroner aboard the Orient Express). They help Hercule to find the mystery. These characters are well developed in a way that you will instantly relate to their doubts and curiosity.

“How fast you go. You arrive at a conclusion much sooner than I would permit myself to do”.

Agatha Christie created so many characters as passengers. Still, she never failed to portray each of them rigorously. Each and every chapter will be an out-and-out page-turner for all the readers. You will unconsciously involve yourself to find those repressed facts in the story. Her writing style is an absolute example of an eloquent work. Hats-off to Agatha Christie for this engagingly penned down novel.

I highly recommend this book to the readers who like reading crime which perfectly holds the suspense towards its end, to the lovers of thriller & detective stories and most importantly to the admirers of Agatha Christie.

Happy reading!!!
